Karo Kuchar Austrian, b. 1986

CV

Karo Kuchar (b. 1986 in Vienna, Austria) lives and works between Vienna and Paris. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, first under Kirsi Mikkola and later in the Expanded Pictorial Space class of Daniel Richter. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, textile works, sculpture, and installation, exploring the complex relationships between the body, architecture, identity, and the social structures that shape contemporary life.

At the core of Kuchar's artistic practice lies the concept of skin as both a physical boundary and a metaphorical surface. Through her distinctive textile works, often referred to as skins, she transfers the textures and imprints of architectural surfaces onto delicate fabrics, transforming fragments of walls into objects that evoke the human body. These works challenge the distinction between interior and exterior, protection and exposure, architecture and anatomy. By combining materials such as organza, cotton, leather, acrylic paint, and padding, Kuchar creates tactile compositions that oscillate between painting, sculpture, and textile art.

Her work frequently incorporates elements of clothing, particularly garments associated with intimacy, sexuality, and personal identity. In series such as Juicy and Tinder Boy, she explores the ways bodies are represented, commodified, and perceived within contemporary society. Soft, sculptural forms extend beyond the picture plane, while references to dating apps, fashion, and digital culture introduce humour and critical reflection. Through these playful yet provocative gestures, Kuchar addresses questions of feminism, desire, vulnerability, and the construction of identity.

A recurring interest in her practice is the transformation of familiar materials and everyday objects into carriers of new meanings. Architectural surfaces become bodily membranes, clothing becomes sculpture, and digital interfaces emerge as extensions of the skin. Her works reveal the often invisible relationships between private and public space, intimacy and display, as well as the social and economic systems that influence how bodies and identities are presented.

Kuchar's international exhibition history includes Time is not a Line at SUPPAN, Vienna, and a solo presentation at Art Brussels (2025); Afterbirth at Vienna Collectors Club (2025); Traveling Within Spaces at Kates-Ferri Projects, New York (2024); Bathing in Space at NADA House, New York (2024); Moneyfestation at SPARK Art Fair Vienna with SUPPAN (2024); and Undercover at Galerie Sophia Vonier, Salzburg (2023). Further presentations include Future Fair, New York (2023), Feminisms at Septieme Gallery, Paris (2022), and an exhibition at Hangar Y, Meudon, as part of the Art Explora and Artagon residency programme (2022). Her work has also been presented at Untitled Art Fair Miami, Enter Art Fair Copenhagen, and Parallel Vienna.

Her works are represented in the public art collection of the State of Tyrol and the private collection of the Rotary Club Albertina. In 2021, she received the Prize of the City of Innsbruck at the 37th Austrian Graphic Competition and the Third Prize at the Koschatzky Art Award. She has also received project grants from the Austrian Cultural Forums in Paris (2022), New York (2023), and Berlin (2025).

Through her experimental approach to materials, bodily forms, and architectural surfaces, Kuchar creates a distinctive artistic language in which the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and lived experience become fluid. Combining sensuality with humour and social critique, her work invites viewers to reconsider the surfaces that surround, protect, and define us.
