Luis Zimmermann German, b. 1998

CV

Luis Zimmermann (b. 1998 in Germany) lives and works in Düsseldorf. He studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he became a master student under Thomas Grünfeld in 2022, and continued his artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the class of Daniel Richter in 2023. His interdisciplinary practice moves between painting, photography, collage, and textile, exploring the fragile relationship between memory, perception, and the passage of time.

At the core of Zimmermann's artistic practice lies an ongoing investigation into the ways images are remembered, reconstructed, and transformed. Drawing from a personal archive of family photographs and his own photographic material, he extracts fragments from their original contexts and rearranges them into new visual constellations. What begins as an intimate encounter with personal history gradually unfolds into a broader reflection on collective memory, cultural narratives, and the instability of representation.

His artistic process combines digital image manipulation with an experimental approach to painting and textile. Photographic fragments are first assembled into digital collages before being transferred onto translucent fabrics, particularly acrylic gauze. These printed textiles are cut, layered, and integrated into the canvas, where they interact with oil and acrylic paint. The resulting compositions oscillate between visibility and concealment, allowing figures, objects, and landscapes to emerge only partially from overlapping surfaces.

The fabric itself plays a central conceptual role. Functioning as a veil, it simultaneously reveals and obscures the imagery beneath, creating an ambiguous space between presence and absence. Familiar motifs appear suspended in atmospheric layers, their contours dissolving into fragments of colour, texture, and light. Through this interplay of transparency and opacity, Zimmermann questions the reliability of visual memory and the ways personal experiences are continuously reshaped by time.

Although his imagery frequently originates from private surroundings, Zimmermann's works also engage with broader social and political realities. Fragments of public demonstrations and collective events occasionally enter his compositions, suggesting the inseparable relationship between individual experience and historical context. Rather than constructing linear narratives, he creates open-ended pictorial spaces in which different temporalities, perspectives, and emotional associations coexist.

Zimmermann's distinctive visual language is characterised by a subtle balance between painterly gesture and photographic precision. Through layering, fragmentation, and deliberate ambiguity, he creates images that appear both immediate and distant, recognisable yet impossible to fully grasp. His compositions evoke the associative nature of remembering, where an isolated colour, a fleeting sensation, or an indistinct silhouette can remain more vivid than the original event itself.

Zimmermann's exhibition history includes faint traces at Galerie nouveaux deuxdeux, Munich (2025), lustre at Galerie Freitag 1830, Aachen (2024), Encounter at Galerie Freitag 1830, Aachen (2023), and Hidden Identities in Basel (2021). Further presentations include Pareidolia, a duo exhibition with Judith Grassl presented by SUPPAN and KALI Gallery in Vienna (2025), sartorial senses at Plateau, Vienna (2024), A Show With No Name at SUPPAN, Vienna (2024), and Sweetheart Honey Baby at the Semperdepot, Vienna (2023). In 2026, he presented a solo exhibition project with SUPPAN at Art Düsseldorf and exhibited at Gerhard Hofland Gallery in Amsterdam.

His works are represented in private collections, including Sammlung Hense, associated with Kunsthalle Gevelsberg, and Sammlung Hengeler Müller in Düsseldorf. In 2021, he was awarded the Deutschlandstipendium in Düsseldorf.

Through his layered approach to photography, painting, and textile, Zimmermann transforms fragments of personal and collective experience into evocative visual narratives. His works explore the space between what is remembered and what is forgotten, suggesting that memory is not a fixed image of the past, but a continuous process of reconstruction, transformation, and disappearance.
