Markus Huemer Austrian, b. 1968

Drawing inspiration from historical scientific illustrations, particularly those of the naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian, Huemer digitally transforms botanical and zoological motifs into unfamiliar biomorphic compositions. His works frequently combine reduced colour palettes, abstract structures, and conceptual references, challenging conventional distinctions between painting and digital imagery. Humour, irony, and often enigmatic titles play an essential role, inviting viewers to reconsider the relationship between images, language, and meaning.

Huemer's work has been presented in major international institutions, including solo exhibitions at the Sprengel Museum Hannover (2019), the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum, Bratislava (2018), the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, Prague (2009), and the Neue Galerie Graz at the Universalmuseum Joanneum (1997), curated by Peter Weibel. His work has also been featured in further exhibitions at the Universalmuseum Joanneum (2005, 2009, 2019), the Albertina and Belvedere in Vienna, Museum Marta Herford, the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, and the ZKM Karlsruhe.

At SUPPAN, Vienna, Huemer presented the solo exhibitions Representative Freedom – Works on Paper (2021) and Without Bats, There Would Be No Tequila (2025), alongside numerous group exhibitions.

His works are held in significant public and private collections, including the Albertina, Belvedere, mumok, Universalmuseum Joanneum, Museum Marta Herford, Saarlandmuseum, Museum Abteiberg, the German Federal Art Collection, and the Daimler, Deutsche Bank, and Wemhöner collections.

Through his investigation of painting and digital technologies, Huemer challenges established notions of representation, creating works that explore the increasingly fluid boundaries between physical images, virtual realities, and systems of visual communication.
