Linda Berger German, b. 1980

CV

Linda Berger (b. 1980 in Aalen, Germany) lives and works in Vienna, where she studied at the University of Applied Arts from 2008 to 2014. Her artistic practice explores the relationship between drawing, time, perception, and the accumulation of individual gestures.

Working primarily with coloured ink and a dip pen, Berger creates intricate, often large-scale compositions through thousands of short, repetitive strokes. What begins as a simple mark gradually develops into a dense, vibrant landscape of overlapping lines, colours, and rhythms. Her drawings unfold through an intuitive, almost meditative process, without preliminary sketches or predetermined outcomes. Each mark responds to those that came before it, allowing the work to evolve through a continuous dialogue between the artist and the surface.

Time is both embedded in the making of these works and reflected in their visual complexity. Through the layering of countless individual gestures, Berger creates organic structures that oscillate between order and chaos, movement and stillness, control and chance. Her compositions evoke inner landscapes in which thoughts, sensations, and experiences accumulate, offering moments of contemplation amid the acceleration of contemporary life.

Berger extends this exploration beyond the traditional boundaries of drawing through her immersive spatial interventions, known as Strichräume. In these installations, entire architectural spaces become surfaces for her intricate line drawings, dissolving the distinction between artwork and environment and transforming drawing into a physical, spatial experience.

Her exhibition history includes solo presentations at Elektrohalle Rhomberg, Salzburg (2022, 2024), Kunstverein Schwäbisch Gmünd (2021, duo exhibition), Bildraum07, Vienna (2020), and Startgalerie MUSA, Vienna (2017). Her spatial installation Stricheraum IIII was presented at Elektrohalle Rhomberg in 2021. Berger has also participated in exhibitions and projects at Künstlerhaus Wien, Stadtgalerie Klagenfurt, and Parallel Vienna.

Her works are represented in significant public and private collections, including the Austrian Federal Collection (Artothek des Bundes), the Collection of the City of Vienna, the Austrian Gallery Belvedere, the STRABAG Artcollection, and the BKS Bank Collection, among others.

Through a practice rooted in repetition, intuition, and the passage of time, Berger transforms the traditional medium of drawing into an expansive visual language, revealing the complexity that emerges when countless individual moments become part of a larger whole.
